23 companies that allow you to work remotely

1. InVision – For me, InVision is a front runner and thought leader, not just in the world of product design and creativity but in the world of remote work/future of work as well. Be sure to check out their blog, ecourses and follow along with their team on Twitter. Current openings are listed here. 

2. Jive – Jive is well known for being a software company interested in the future of work and supports a “remote not removed” culture. Many of the current openings at Jive list target hire regions instead of specific locations and go on to state “This role can be home office based near any major airport in the central region.” Check out Jive’s openings here. 

3. Buffer – While Buffer is well known for having a fully distributed workforce at this point, did you know they’re also a huge resource on best practices for remote workers? Their blog constantly shares really useful productivity tips, health advice and thoughts on the future of work. Current open roles include Engineering, Customer Happiness and Digital Marketing. 

4. HighRise – This CRM software, once part of the Basecamp portfolio, is now it’s own company and hires remotely often. Stay tuned on WeWorkRemotely for upcoming posts (they just recently took down a couple of listings because I’m sure they fill the roles quickly!)

5. Help Scout – Help Scout believes in remote work as a way to invest in the best people, regardless of geographical constraints. Their blog is another great resource for reading up on the latest in remote work and the future of work and you can check out available roles here. 

6. FlexJobs – FlexJobs not only is a fab-tastic resource for those on the remote job hunt, but their entire team is totally remote themselves. FlexJobs is not focused only on tech roles so if you’re not an engineer, be sure to check out their other 54 job search categories! 

7. GitHub – GitHub is head-quartered in San Francisco and also has physical offices in a few locations across the globe, but it may surprise you to know that a lot of their workforce is remote – across departments. You can check out current openings here.

8. Wikimedia Foundation – I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Wikimedia Foundation hires remote! If you’re mission-driven and all about accessibility, check out their openings here. 

9. IBM – IBM has a massive workforce and many IBMers have been working remotely for years! One of my mentors has been working at IBM for 30+ years – and all of them have been remote. 

10. PowerToFly – Our friends at PowerToFly have a fully remote team and many of our very own Skillcrush teammates were hired through the PowerToFly platform! To top it all off, several of our students have gone on to great remote career success after pairing our courses with PowerToFly.

11. The USDS and 18F – Think the federal government is behind the times? You’re wrong. The US Digital Service hires remote workers to solve compelling and complex problems for federal agencies, cities and states. The GSA even created 18F, a separate startup and sister organization of the USDS that’s meant to disrupt the federal government from within. 

12. Harvest – I recommend Harvest to all my beginner freelancer students for time-tracking and invoicing – be sure to check out their capabilities. Not to mention their remote listings, available here. 

13. Box – I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my old stomping grounds Box here. The cloud company has a lot of field teams full of remote staff all over the world. One of my favorite ex-team members (Hi Preston!) was hired specifically as a remote worker on my Consulting team. Even those who aren’t fully remote have the flexibility to take work from home days as needed. 

14. Olark – We’re big fans of Olark (you can live chat with our career counselors right on our homepage!) and they’re always hiring remotely! Check out their current openings here. 

15. Funsize – While the Austin product design studio has gorgeous downtown Austin digs, a large portion of their talented team works remotely, participating in meetings from cities in Asia and Europe, as well as NYC and San Francisco. 

16. Zapier – This fully remote company has open roles for writers, engineers, customer support pros, data scientists and more. Check them out here. 

17. Kissmetrics – The innovative data marketing company is always hiring for really interesting positions and they’re…wait for it….REMOTE! :) Check out current openings here. 

18. Automattic – The Automattic team is fully remote and flies the entire company to a single location once a year for a week for team building and bonding. They’re hiring for a variety of roles across their product line. Check them out here. 

19. Balsamiq – While Balsamiq doesn’t have any new roles listed at the moment, they’re always looking for the perfect culture fit. Their careers page outlines pros and cons of working remotely and even shares their favorite reads on motivation and future of work. 

20. Basecamp – Arguably the company that kicked off the remote working trend, Basecamp’s team not only works remotely but has literally written the book on remote work. They also run WeWorkRemotely which is chock-full of awesome remote gigs. 

21. Elastic – This innovative company offers a range of roles, not just across departments but across locations as well. Some roles have loose geographical requirements, some provide more specific options (ie. one of these three cities) while others are openly remote all the way. Check out their job listings here. 

22. Upworthy – Upworthy doesn’t exactly consider themselves to be a team of remote workers. Remote to them is “being away from the office.” They prefer fully distributed as a descriptor and are another thought leader in the future of work space. Open roles can be found here. 

23. Wirecutter – I never buy electronics without reading Wirecutter’s reviews, as I’ve previously chronicled here and I was delighted when I found out that while they have offices in NYC, LA & Portland, working out of those offices is not required and they hire remotely so the best talent can work from anywhere.
